While not essential for installing a solar panel or wind turbine, a multimeter is certainly useful - and this little bargain won't burn too big a hole in your pocket! It's great for peace of mind to be able to check the wiring connections you have made. And in the unlikely event that there are any problems in the installation, being able to measure volts and continuity in a few places will make problem solving much easier.
